Work It Like a Rock Star

So, sometimes we have studio time and I have nothing to shoot...hence these photos.  An impromptu photo shoot with three friends, some hideous makeup, and some hair teasing actually taught me a lot.  Up until then I had never shot a group of guys before.  Men of the world, I hate to break it to you, but you aren't quite as sexy or beautiful to shoot as women (David Beckham underwear ads are the exception to this).  I also learned that three people are much more difficult to light than one or two; go figure.  Thanks boys for being such patient models and giving me lots of practice!

Falling In Love

For our final summer intensive project we had to come up with an idea and present at least 5 photos based on that idea.  The premise of this project is that no photo exists just to be a photo.  There is always some idea that inspires it.

For my project I wanted to display through images what it feels like to fall in love.  Here is my artist statement and images.  I mounted them on foam core and then on pieces of silver sheet metal to create a contemporary framing alternative.

Falling in love is one of the most beautiful things that we as human beings can experience.  It is exhilarating, freeing, electric and frightening.  It is through this experience that we learn to share our innermost being with another; and while this leaves us vulnerable and exposed, it also affords us the opportunity to be consumed by passion, joy, and devotion.

This series of diptychs follows a couple as they progress through the different stages of their relationship, while the dancers next to each image express the emotions being felt by the couple at each moment.  To me, these images capture the essence and emotion of what it feels like to fall in love.

Creepy Carnies

To practice our night shooting skills we had a workshop at the Montana State Fair.  What a trip!  Apparently the fair is an excuse for all girls under the age of 18 to get out of the house in incredibly inappropriate clothing while walking around in the dirt eating funnel cake.  While this was amusing, the fried foods, super fun rides, cold beers and good friends really made it a memorable night.  Here are some pics of all things carnie.

Tiny Little Things

Yesterday I took my first crack at macro photography.  This type of photography is made for anal retentive people.  You literally spend hours working on an object that is only inches in size and moving it around centimeters at a time.  Sounds right up my alley right?  I have a long way to go but am happy with my first shots.
